In 2008, Barack Obama reversed the trend of Republican dominance here (although just barely), defeating John McCain by about 14,000 votes out of 4.3 million cast (49.7% to 49.4%). In percentage terms, it was the 2nd closest race of the 2008 election (behind Missouri).
In 2012, North Carolina was again the 2nd closest race (this time behind Florida) as the state flipped Republican. Mitt Romney beat Obama by about 2%.
Donald Trump won the state by 3.6% over Hillary Clinton in 2016 and by 1.3% over Joe Biden in 2020.

Since 1972, the state has voted Republican, except for 1976 when it supported Jimmy Carter of Georgia. Unlike many other southern states, Mississippi has not experienced great population growth; the 2000 census led to the state being reduced from seven to six electoral votes, the lowest number since 1848. In 2020, Donald Trump easily won the state by 58% to Joe Biden's 41%

In 1968, the state sided with third-party candidate George Wallace. Since then, it has gone Republican in ten of thirteen elections, voting Democratic twice for
fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton and once for Jimmy Carter.
In recent elections, it has become a solidly red state, with the Republican margin of victory increasing in each of the last five elections. In 2020, Donald Trump defeated Joe Biden by almost 28 points.

Although perceived as solidly Republican today (Donald Trump won by nearly 20% over Joe Biden in 2020), Louisiana has voted Democratic three times since 1976 when the nominee of that party was a Southern governor. Jimmy Carter won there in 1976, as did Bill Clinton, both in 1992 and 1996.

From 1872 through 1976, Texas went Democratic in the vast majority of elections. However, that changed in 1980, and Texas has sided with the Republicans ever since. Having a Bush on the ticket each election from 1980 through 2004 (except 1996) helped make Texas a reliably “red” state. In 2020, Donald Trump won the state by 6.5% over Joe Biden, the narrowest margin since 1996.
Texas’ population has grown rapidly in recent decades, and it has added two or more electoral votes in each Census since 1980. The 2020 Census population of 29.1 million was up four million from 2010. No state had a larger numeric increase in the past decade. The state's 40 electoral votes are second only to California’s 54. This large electoral prize, coupled with shifting demographics, will likely make Texas a major battleground in upcoming presidential elections.

The state has traditionally gone Republican in presidential elections. Except for Bill Clinton’s win in 1996, Arizona voted Republican from 1952 through 2016. However, that 2016 election saw Donald Trump win by a narrower margin than other recent GOP nominees and in 2020 Joe Biden won the state by 0.3%. Biden's 49.4% support was the highest level for a Democratic candidate since 1964.
The Grand Canyon State’s population has grown rapidly in the past half century, and its number of electoral votes has almost tripled from four in 1960. In a bit of a surprise, the state did not gain an additional electoral vote after the 2020 Census.

UTAH:..
Utahans voted for Democrat Franklin Roosevelt four times (1932 through 1944) and for his successor Harry S. Truman in 1948. Aside from that period, the state has only voted for Democrats twice, the last time being in 1964 when Lyndon Johnson won a landslide victory over Barry Goldwater. In 2012, Mitt Romney defeated Barack Obama, by 72.8% to 24.8%. This was the largest margin of victory in any of the 50 states since Ronald Reagan beat Walter Mondale here by 74.5% to 24.7% in 1984.
While Donald Trump won in 2016, he failed to receive a majority of votes, winning 45.5% to 27.5% over Hillary Clinton. Trump enjoyed less support than prior Republicans with the state's large Mormon population. Mormon conservative Evan McMullin provided these voters with an alternative. McMullin received over 21.5% of the vote, the best 3rd party performance in any single state since Ross Perot in 1992. While Joe Biden lost to Trump by 20% in 2020, his 37.7% support was the highest for a Democratic nominee since 1964.
Utah saw the largest percentage growth in population - about 18.4% - over the past decade. This did not result in a change in electoral votes, as the state had just added one after the 2010 Census.
